Holly, Ivy, Mistletoe

Holly, Ivy, Mistletoe

All in this same season grow

Mistletoe, Ivy & Holly are

The most foolish plants by far

*

Ivy, Holly, when in bloom

Duelling lovers’ roles assume

Whose prickly, poisoned words prevent

Revealing feelings truly meant.

Whole winters passed with nary a brief

Glimpse of softer hearts beneath

Yet neither would let enmity rest

And concealed their love in faux contest

*

Holly, Ivy met one day

Beneath the moors in early May

Ivy Holly’s spines forgot

Took the chance to change the plot

One summer evening made amends

Could Holly, Ivy now be friends?

Holly’s sharp wit soon returned

Ivy denied her ardor burned

When the rains fell, 7 months on

Ivy’s fondness had but gone

‘Til she gazed on Holly fine

Serving her the holy wine

Yet in the solstice service dance

They shied away from mistletoe’s chance

Oh, Holly’s spiky, Holly’s mean

My love for Holly’s evergreen.
